As the Senior Environmental Manager, you will lead environmental compliance and management activities across a large-scale battery manufacturing facility, ensuring the site meets all federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements.
Reporting into the site's EHS leadership team, you will take ownership of key environmental programs including air permitting and compliance, chemical management, hazardous waste, wastewater, stormwater, regulatory reporting, and ISO 14001.
This is a highly visible role requiring strong technical environmental expertise, particularly within complex manufacturing operations, alongside the ability to work effectively with regulatory agencies, consultants, operational teams, and senior site leadership.
• Lead environmental compliance activities across the manufacturing site, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
• Manage site air permits and associated compliance requirements, including Michigan Air Emissions Reporting System (MAERS) reporting and ongoing emissions monitoring.
• Oversee environmental permitting associated with new and existing manufacturing equipment and facility operations.
• Establish and maintain environmental monitoring programs and systems to ensure ongoing compliance with site permit requirements.
• Lead chemical substance management and regulatory reporting requirements, including TSCA, SARA Tier II, and Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting.
• Maintain chemical inventories and support the management and approval of Safety Data Sheets in partnership with Safety, Purchasing, and operational teams.
• Oversee environmental reporting across air, chemical, water, and waste programs, ensuring accurate and timely submissions to regulatory agencies.
• Lead hazardous waste management activities and ensure appropriate handling, transportation, storage, and disposal practices across the facility.
• Oversee wastewater and stormwater compliance programs, including permitting, monitoring, inspections, and communication with regulatory agencies.
• Support the development and maintenance of Stormwater Pollution Prevention and Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure plans.
• Serve as a key point of contact with local, state, and federal environmental regulatory agencies.
• Partner with external environmental consultants and specialist vendors to support permitting, compliance, monitoring, and reporting activities.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to Environmental Specialists supporting water, waste, air, and other environmental programs.
• Maintain environmental KPIs and drive continuous improvement in environmental performance across the facility.
• Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the site's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
• 10+ years of environmental experience within manufacturing, automotive, battery, chemical processing, or another highly regulated industrial environment.
• Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements within large-scale manufacturing operations.
• Demonstrated experience managing air permitting, emissions compliance, and environmental reporting.
• Experience with TSCA and SARA regulatory requirements, including Tier II and TRI reporting.
• Strong knowledge of hazardous waste, wastewater, and stormwater compliance programs.
• Experience working directly with environmental regulatory agencies and external consultants.
• Experience implementing or maintaining ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, purchasing, safety, and senior leadership teams.
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
• Environmental leadership experience within large-scale manufacturing operations.
• Battery manufacturing, automotive, chemical processing, semiconductor, or advanced manufacturing experience.
• Experience working with Michigan environmental regulations and regulatory agencies.
• Strong knowledge of Michigan air permitting and MAERS reporting requirements.
• Chemistry background or strong technical understanding of chemical management.
• Professional environmental certifications such as CHMM or equivalent.
