The Role
As a Software Product Manager focused on Controls, you will own the roadmap and product direction for software used to control and optimize large-scale energy systems.
This is a technically focused Product Management role sitting between the market, Applications Engineering, and Software Engineering teams. You will determine what capabilities should be built, why they matter commercially, and how they should be prioritized across the roadmap.
The product scope is centered on controls software used across energy storage and other power-generation applications, including areas such as power dispatch, reactive power, power availability, grid services, energy signals, and plant-level control.
You will be expected to independently assess market requirements rather than simply respond to sales requests. This means understanding what customers and different markets genuinely need, challenging assumptions where appropriate, and giving engineering teams clear reasoning behind product priorities.
The role owns the full roadmap from identifying market needs through product definition, development, launch, and ongoing improvement. Program Managers support execution, but the Product Manager retains ownership of what gets built, when, and why.
Responsibilities Include:
• Owning the product strategy and roadmap for controls software across large-scale energy systems
• Translating market, customer, and Applications Engineering requirements into clear software product requirements
• Prioritizing features based on technical feasibility, commercial impact, and genuine market need
• Understanding control requirements around power dispatch, reactive power, grid services, power availability, and energy management
• Assessing market needs independently and challenging sales or stakeholder requests where required
• Identifying new product requirements across BESS, solar, grid, and other power-generation applications
• Owning product decisions through ambiguity and determining what should be delivered now versus later
• Building trust with technical teams through strong product judgment and a clear understanding of the market
The Candidate
• 3+ years of Product Management experience, with stronger experience expected for more senior candidates
• Strong technical understanding of software-based control systems within the energy or power industry
• Experience with BESS is highly relevant, although solar, wind, microgrids, transmission and distribution, thermal generation, or other power-sector controls backgrounds can also translate well
• Exposure to products such as EMS, SCADA, ADMS, PLC-based systems, microgrid controllers, protection controls, or similar software platforms
• Experience taking a product from 0-1, launching major new capabilities, or scaling an existing product into new markets
• Utility, microgrid, and C&I experience are all relevant, while purely residential backgrounds are less closely matched
• Engineering or other relevant technical degree is mandatory
• Willing to work from Palo Alto, California, in office
The team is primarily considering P3-level candidates, with scope to consider P4-level profiles where the individual has the experience and technical depth to take ownership from day one.
